Short History of Berwyn Baptist Church
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen – Matthew 28:18-20
The Lord started Berwyn Baptist Church in November 1922 when He put upon the heart of a group of people to begin a work of His grace in the Berwyn area of College Park, MD.
The church started off at 48th and Tecumseh, faithfully sharing the Word of God as the Lord built His church when a Sunday School enrollment of 400 people in 1950 climbed to 590 people in 1953. A new facility was needed to house the growing church. The current property on Cherokee Street “God’s Three Acres” was purchased in March 1953. Sunday service was held for the first time on November 1, 1959 at the current location.
Berwyn Baptist partnered with the Lord to help the following mission efforts:
1979 -1996 – Chinese Baptist Mission
1981-1986 – Cambodian Mission
Six couples from Berwyn Baptist have become full-time missionaries in various places: Alaska; Japan; Burkina Faso, Africa, Quito,Ecuador; Venezuela, South America and Thailand.
Berwyn Baptist Church helped to found Kettering Baptist along with three to four other churches in 1969.
Moving forward to 2022, the Lord continues to use Berwyn Baptist Church to share the gospel throughout the community and the world.
